On September 19, 2013, an article was published online in JAMA Ophthalmology that verified the association between statin use and development of cataracts.

Researchers from Texas and Alexandria, Egypt collaborated on the study to determine the impact of statins on successive health of the eye.

Statins are medications that belong to the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor class of drugs. These medications are indicated for lowering elevated levels of cholesterol, and are to be used in conjunction with proper diet and exercise.

There have been conflicting findings regarding the relationship between statins and resulting cataract disease (clouding of the lens within the eye), and investigators sought to clarify the link in question.

Researchers aggregated records from a military health care system database, and created matched patient cohorts of statin users vs. nonusers based on 44 different variables.

The final analysis included records of 6,972 matched patients (13,944 total), and adjusted for potential confounding factors. Investigators found that patients treated with statins had a 27% increased chance of developing cataract disease compared to patients who had not taken such medications.

Statins (Advicor, Caduet, Crestor, Juvisync, Lescol, Lipitor, Livalo, Mevacor, Pravachol, Simcor, Vytorin, Zocor) are medications that belong to the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor class of drugs.

These drugs are indicated for lowering elevated levels of cholesterol in combination with diet and exercise. Mevacor (lovastatin) was approved on August 31, 1987 by the FDA, and other statins were subsequently approved.

Using FAERS data (from 11/01/1997 to 12/31/2012), aggregated and standardized by the AdverseEvent RxFilter process, the team identified 692 reports of cataract conditions where statins were listed as the primary suspect drug. Of these cases, the team identified 113 hospitalizations and 64 cases of disability.

Note: In order to calculate the total number of cases involving cataract conditions, we aggregated reports listing the following adverse events: MedDRA Preferred Term: Cataract operation; MedDRA High-Level Term: Cataract conditions.
